The SETTS Team is quietly changing the face of instruction for the 12,858 students and 1000 teachers within the WESELPA. The impact of staff development, classroom support and student implementation can best be told by the stories of student success: A significant number of SDC and RSP students at one middle school are now scoring in the proficient range on their writing assessments through the use of portable keyboards. Their instruction was supported by the Co: Writer, Draft: Builder and Write: Out Loud products from Don Johnston Incorporated. A third grade student, who is non-communicative with his peers, brought his mother to tears when he made a class report using a self designed PowerPoint presentation. A secondary student, who is physically challenged, can now interact with his peers through the use of an augmentative speech output device. For the first time in his life, he has a voice. Students with severe disabilities have become an integral part of their school and experience language development by filming, editing and producing digital movies of important events that happen at their school. The BuildAbility program by Don Johnston Incorporated supports their efforts. A fourth grade SDC student, who by using Co: Writer and a portable keyboard, has improved his assignments to such a degree that he is applying to be a reporter for the school magazine. Third and fifth grade students, who are learning disabled, and have language delays are producing PowerPoint presentations on the "Works of Picasso" and the "Life, Times and major Characters in the Renaissance Period". For the first time they are finding equity with the work of their peers. A fourth grade RSP student has started a technology club in his neighborhood, showing his general education friends how to more effectively use technology for school. In addition, SETTS members have supported districts and students by providing AT assessments at school sites and districts. Countless hours have been provided to teachers for individual consultation and classroom support. It is this type of success that the team sees with students that fuels their enthusiasm and motivates them to continue.
